Manchester United new boy Phil Jones admits he did not expect to play such a prominent role for the club during the early weeks of the season.
Jones joined the Premier League champions from Blackburn Rovers in the summer and made his debut as a substitute in the opening day win at West Bromwich Albion.
The 19-year-old has started the subsequent three games, impressing at centre-half in the victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, before catching the eye at right-back in Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Bolton Wanderers.
The England hopeful feels he has already improved as a player since joining United and is optimistic he has proved his worth to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Different class
"I didn't expect to be playing so often quite so quickly but that is football," said Jones.
"When you get your chance you have to take it. Hopefully I have shown the manager what I can do.
"I definitely feel I have improved since joining United. How quickly they move the ball is
different class.
"Having the opportunity to play with this kind of team-mate is bound to make me better."
Jones is now hoping to retain his place in the team when United open their UEFA Champions League group phase away to Benfica on Wednesday.
He added: "The main reason I came to Manchester United was to test my abilities against the best players in the world.
"The Champions League is a great competition for me to do that. Hopefully if I get selected I will prove that I am up to the task."
